On July 2, Breakthru Beverage Illinois associates had the opportunity to interact with and serve lunch to some of the community’s finest: seniors at the Southwest Regional Senior Center in Cicero. The Independence Day luncheon, hosted by Meals on Wheels Chicago (MoWC), marked the latest opportunity in our with MoWC. During the past 10 years, Breakthru IL has helped raise more than $2.4 million for the organization, which serves food to thousands of seniors and individuals with disabilities every week, across nearly 80 Chicago neighborhoods. Giving back to our community is one of Breakthru’s core values, and we’re honored to play a continued role in helping MoWC work toward its mission of eliminating hunger and isolation for Chicago’s seniors and individuals with disabilities. “It’s not just about selling products in our community,” said Breakthru IL Beverage Development Manager Natalia Cardenas. “It’s about the community and being an active participant in it.” The event began by honoring the World War II and Vietnam veterans who were in attendance. Breakthru IL associates and fellow seniors watched the veterans as they marched and gave them a standing ovation. A few rounds of bingo and a raffle energized the entire event and gave some the chance to win Breakthru t-shirts and gift bags. The excitement surrounding a potential “BINGO!” callout could be felt within the room. Several volunteers also helped prepare and serve lunch, while others mingled and conversed with those in attendance. For the Breakthru IL volunteers, it was wonderful to see the smiles and hear the laughs from the community’s seniors at Monday’s MoWC event. It was also a cause that hit close to home for many. “We all have loved ones that are aging and we want them to know that they’re not forgotten,” Breakthru IL associate Araceli Pena said.
